Learning the Ropes Course with Helen Ayling

Have you been curious about our new rope wall in the lower studio? The rope wall was first developed by BKS Iyengar, who used it as a prop to support and intensify his asana practice. He called the rope work yoga karunta, meaning ‘yoga puppetry’.

The ropes work by using gravity as a natural form of resistance, causing the body to open much further than it would in a regular yoga practice. Bats and sloths are the only mammals that don’t suffer from arthritis and joint degeneration; they have in common that they both hang upside down! Like the bats and sloths, rope wall work releases tension and pressure from the joints and deeply stretches the entire muscular-skeletal body. Rope poses are especially beneficial for spine health through use of traction to relieve pressure from compressed vertebral discs. They can also be used to create deep opening in the organic body, which nourishes the organs and quiets the mind.

Based on BKS Iyengar’s principles of alignment, ‘the wall’ is used as a prop to deepen asana by opening and creating space in the body using therapeutic techniques. Iyengar designed the original rope wall using ropes attached to hooks on a wall. With each passing year, ‘Wall Rope Yoga’ evolved and introduced new systems of adjustable straps to accommodate all body types.

Yogahaven is excited to offer a 6-session Learning the Ropes course consisting of monthly hour and a half classes in which we will establish your ability to access rope work and develop an understanding of the asanas through working on and off the ropes. You will see how the traction and support provided by the rope wall can deepen your understanding of body and mind in your asana practise.

Although the ropes can be used therapeutically, in this course we will be using them to develop a firm and stable practise. Therefore the course is aimed at students without physical injury or conditions that affect their practise. Using the ropes can help you work through fear and build confidence so that you are able to take what you’ve learned on the wall onto your mat and into your daily life.
